'100 Reads' Reading Challenge
We are excited to announce the launch of a new reading initiative at West Leigh. As a way of encouraging regular reading, and an emphasis on children exploring a breadth of different texts, all children will have the chance to take part in the '100 reads' challenge.
The challenge is for each child to read 100 books from a set reading list, by the end of Year 2.
You will find the list of the '100 Reads' books for Reception and Year 1/2 below.
We would like the children to keep a note of the books that they are reading, therefore they will be given a reading log. There will be incentives for following the challenge throughout the year and a certificate will be given every time a child reads 10 of the '100 reads' book titles.
If a book is covered in class the teachers will encourage the children to note these titles down, on their 100 reads logs, as they are read.
We understand that some children will be nearing the end of Year 2 already but efforts to get as far through the 100 books as possible, will be noted.
We hope that this recommended reading list will give the children some focus and direction when it comes to choosing their reading books, with all the titles being carefully selected for their specific age ranges. We would also like to emphasise that the children will probably be sharing these books with an adult rather than reading them independently, but this still counts as a book read.
How can I find the books on the list?
Some of the books may be found on classroom bookshelves or in the school library, but other ways of locating the books will be...
Do you have any of the '100 reads' books at home? If so, perhaps you would like to donate one to school? We will keep a '100 reads' book swap box in the school library and then when you bring one in, you will be able to swap it for another.
We will be using the commission earned from book fairs in school, to buy books from the '100 reads' list and will be keeping them in our book swap boxes.
Your local library
The majority of the books on the list can be found at local libraries. Take your list along with you next time that you visit!
Have fun and enjoy reading!
