Term 3 has already got off to a great start with us taking part in 2 days of exciting, inspiring maths fun!
We carried out different maths challenges and investigations and also integrated art, producing some fantastic patterns.
We worked in table groups and our challenge was to make the numbers 1 -20 using four 4s each time. Some of us even moved onto the the extension of 'Five 5s'!
Archimedes, a well known Ancient Greek mathematician, created the Archimedian spiral: a spiral where the gaps between the curves of the spiral are always the same distance apart (based on a set of concentric circles).
We used this as a basis for creating our own spirals using colouring pencils.
In this challenge, we were asked to draw an 11cm by 13cm rectangle and find the fewest number of squares that could be drawn inside it.
Stairs to Squares
We were shown a growing pattern of squares, each arranged in a stair-like structure. Firstly, we needed to calculate the area and perimeter for each 'figure' and then see if we could spot a link between the figure number and it's area and perimeter.
We were then asked to see if we could work out a rule which would help us find the area/ perimeter for the 10th figure and even the 1000th!
Poetry Day- Friday 19th January
The whole school was treated to a Poetry Day last Friday, entitled 'Rhyme Craft'!
Our inspiration for the day came from the computer mining game, 'Minecraft'.
We had an introductory assembly where we found out a bit more about Minecraft and then how we could use it to write poetry. All classes then went off and focused on a particular genre of poetry. Year 5's focus was 'Performance Poetry'.
We started off the morning by working in groups and then creating our own minecraft worlds which would be used as a basis for our poetry. Then, after break, we watched some examples of performance poetry and started to write our own poems which would be suitable for performing. We thought about intonation, rhythm, rhyme and attitude!!
After lunch, we performed our poems and then voted as a class for the group who would go forward and perform their poem in the afternoon, whole school, Poetry Slam!! Bea, Molly and Jack Julian were our winners and did a fantastic job!!
See below for what we got up to...
Year 5 visit 'We the Curious'- Wednesday 24th January
As part of our 'What is beyond the sky?' topic, Year 5 visited 'We the Curious' (formerly @Bristol) to find out more about Space and what might be lying beyond the sky!
We had a FANTASTIC time and came back with heads brimming full of interesting facts to feed back into our topic.
Our morning consisted of exploring the ground floor of the museum, which contained a lot of exhibits and activities linked to one of our first topics, 'Brilliant Bodies'. We then moved upstairs where we were able to create some 'Stop Motion' animation and make giant bubbles!
After lunch, we experienced the Planetarium and what an experience it was!! With 3-D glasses making the show even more realistic, we watched 'We are aliens' and found out more about scientists' take on life on Mars (something which we're currently investigating in school).
To round off the trip, we had a brilliant 'Destination Space' workshop, where we found out about Tim Peake's experience on the International Space Station.
