English – Week beginning 18th May
Health and fitness week 2020!
We all really love health and fitness week at BJS and it is such a shame that you can’t be in school to experience it this year! The activities this week are all based around sports, keeping active, outdoor learning, healthy eating and mental well-being.
Choose at least one of the activities below to complete each day.
Most of you should be able to complete the activities independently.
You do not have to complete all of these activities.
We really hope you enjoy them!
Create an information poster or leaflet (2 or 3 day activity)
Research your favourite sports personality and create an information poster/leaflet all about them.
They might be a footballer, rugby player, tennis player, golfer, swimmer, long distance runner, long jumper, gymnast, ballet dancer, ride horses…
If you don’t have a particular person you like, choose someone you would like to know more about!
Use the internet or a book to research your chosen sportsperson
Always check with an adult before using the internet
Think about subheadings you could use to focus your research (eg. early life, their sport, training, achievements)
Plan your poster or leaflet on scrap paper first (think about what will go where!)
Create your poster or leaflet! (This could be done on plain paper and then glued into your work book or using a computer program and printed off)
Make it colourful and eye-catching
Remember to include the features of a non-chronological report (information page); Title, headings and subheadings, introduction, fact boxes, pictures and diagrams with labels
Your poster might be as simple as some drawings labelled with facts or you could challenge yourself to design a whole leaflet about the sport and athlete!
Please take care with your presentation! Best handwriting, neat colouring and underline with a ruler!
Observational alphabet and shape poem
Hopefully the weather will continue to be good enough for you to spend some learning time outside!
Use the PDF pack below for this activity
Observe things around you – 1 for each letter of the alphabet (you might have to leave some letters because they might be too tricky from your garden!)
Describe! Add some adjectives and similes to your first alphabet to create some lovely imagery
Create a shape poem using some or all of your ideas. It could be in the shape of a plant or tree in your garden.
Invent your own P.E. game and write some instructions for it.
This might take longer than 1 session.
Have a look at these instructions for playing rounders:
Invent a P.E game! Think about games you already know. Could you magpie ideas from them?
Write your ideas down on scrap paper first
Write the instructions for the game! (You might want to include some labelled diagrams)
Use the rounders instructions above for ideas on how to set it out
Finally, play your game with your family if possible!
Generating ideas and creative writing (2 days)
Write a sports themed story!
Choose 1 or 2 or the sports quick write activity mats to complete
Either use your ideas from one of these to write a sports themed story
OR come up with your own idea for your story! Do you end up becoming a successful footballer?or maybe you win a gold medal at the Olympics!
When you have completed your story, carefully illustrate it
Sport themed acrostic poem
Write an acrostic poem about a sport of your choice!
Make a mind map about the sport first. Write anything down linked to the sport or activity.
Have a look at Miss J’s example below!
D ark water glimmers below me
I gaze down from up high
V ibrant colours flash in the crowd
I breathe deeply and prepare
N ow the moment has come
G asps from the crowd as I leap into the air!
Now it's your turn!
Keep a healthy eating diary
Have a look at the Eat well plate on the website below
Please check with an adult before using the internet
Use the template below to keep a diary of the food you eat over the week!
Or you could draw your own version in your work book - remember to use a ruler please!
See if you can spot which section of the eat well plate the food is from.
