School Council

Each year, we begin the process of electing our School Council by discussing what the role of a School Councillor involves. We agreed that the role of a School Councillor:

  • Is a responsible position.
  • Represents the student voice by listening to the views, concerns and ideas of other pupils.
  • Shares views, concerns and ideas of other pupils with teachers.
  • Has sensible ideas on how to make our school better.
  • Can think of ways to contribute to our local environment.
  • Can help with fundraising events for our school and other charities.

We continue by discussing Democracy and the role of elections. Pupils then put their names forward to run to be their class School Council Rep. The School Councillor role is a very popular one, so names are usually needed to be pulled out of a hat to have the final eight candidates for each class.

Each candidate makes a manifesto and present these manifestos to the school in assembly midway through Term 1.

Polling Day

Towards the end of Term 1, we hold a West Leigh Polling Day!  Children are given ballot papers to vote for two candidates from their class. This voting is done in polling booths and their ballot papers are posted in the ballot box. Polling Day is always an exciting and successful event!

School Council Meetings

School Council meetings are held termly to discuss actions and next steps to help improve our school.  Past actions have included:

  • Researching what pupils are happy with in our playgrounds and what can be done to make them even better. The School Councillors then worked with the PTA to act upon some of the feedback given.
  • Organising and running the annual West Leigh Talent Show at the end of Term 4!
  • Organising sponsored events to raise money for our Solar Panel project with HUGE success – over £3000 raised!
