House System

At West Leigh Infant School and Backwell Junior School, we have four Federation Houses. These are:

Sycamore (yellow)

Oak (blue)

Willow (red)

Beech (green)

For demonstrating good behaviours and work, the children can be rewarded with House Points. These house points are collated every two weeks and are displayed on our House board in the hall. This shows who the fortnightly winner is as well as who is the current overall winner.

As well as collecting house points, we also have Four House Enrichment mornings over the school year. These mornings allow the children to work collaboratively in their houses on a fun, engaging and hands-on challenge.

Enrichment Mornings 2022-2023

On Tuesday 24th January, we had our first Enrichment Morning of the year, in fact thanks to Covid-19, it was the first Enrichment Morning ever for all of the children at West Leigh!

Our theme this year is STEM and the teachers came up with four brilliant challenges for the children to get their science, technology, engineering and mathematical brains working. Oak House was given the challenge to use Lego WeDo; Beech House was given the challenge to design and make an egg holder to protect an egg when dropped at height; Sycamore House was given the challenge to create a bridge from newspaper; and Willow House was given the challenge to build a tower using spaghetti and marshmallows. The children worked incredibly well together and there was lots of fantastic collaboration. There are certainly some STEM stars of the future at West Leigh. Well done everyone and thank you to the teachers for organising such a great morning and the parent helpers for support these activities.

On Tuesday 14th March, we had our second Enrichment Morning of the year at West Leigh Infants. We continued with our theme of STEM but this time, each house had the opportunity to experience a different STEM challenge. In our second Enrichment Morning, Oak House was given the challenge to build a bridge made from newspaper and program a Bee-Bot to follow a set of instructions; Beech House was given the challenge to build a tall tower using spaghetti and marshmallows; Sycamore House was given the challenge to design and make an egg holder to protect an egg when dropped at height: and Willow House was given the challenge to use Lego WeDo and complete other engineering problems. Again, the children worked incredibly well together with lots of fantastic collaboration. Miss Hiscocks asked a few children for their thoughts on this Enrichment Morning:

  • Louie – My favourite bit about today was getting to work with my brother.
  • Pia – I loved ALL OF IT! I really liked making the marble run because I was really good at it.
  • Nina G – My favourite bit was when I was building the block tower because I was laughing when it kept falling over. I didn’t win in any of the challenges but I didn’t mind because that’s how we learn.
  • George – My favourite part was making the maze because I ended up in the learning pit so I knew I was learning.
  • Thomas B – Making favourite bit was the egg drop challenge because I’ve never done it before.
  • Orla – I liked the Bee-bots because they were fun.

Well done everyone and a big thank you again to the teachers for organising another great morning and the parent helpers who came in to help support our STEM challenges.
