Reading Books
Here at West Leigh, we are lucky enough to have a wide range of reading books from a variety of reading schemes. When children first start to learn to read, it is important that they have books that enable them to read most of the text fluently, whilst still offering them the correct level of challenge.
So that this can happen, our books are colour coded and progress in numerical order. We have ordered our reading books this way to ensure that the words are decodable, and match the order of which the sounds are taught in phonics. This allows us to ensure that each child is taking home books which are of an appropriate level for them.
The correct level of text will both inspire and enthuse, while nurturing their reading ability. This ensures that the children progress rapidly with understanding. Understanding is the key to enjoyment and text comprehension starts in Reception during story time.
All children are encouraged to select books from the classroom, library or home to share with their parents to encourage a love of reading. Please have a look at the '100 reads challenge' to find out about our school's reading initiative.
