SAVAGE STONE AGE
During term 3 and 4, year three are learning about life during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age!
Inspirational maths days
During the first week of term three, BJS took part in two incredible inspirational maths days! 3JB spent the first morning creating an amazing array city which can be found on display in the hall! During the second morning, we collected our own data and created brilliant bar charts to find out 3JB’s favourite breakfast cereals!
We filled the rest of our time problem solving, playing maths games in teams and exploring tessellation.
3JB have just started their new maths unit - DIVISION!. In our first lesson, we used our prior understanding to try and work out how to divide using the base 10 blocks to help us. To divide, we need to split up our place value chart into what we are dividing by and then share our base 10 equally between the number of rows. Counting up the base 10 in one row should give us our answer!
Mrs Jarvis was so impressed with our hard work and determination in this first lesson - we were even awarded with two class points!
During our first topic lesson of term three, 3JB travelled back to Stone Age times. We imaged we had just landed – no food, no water, no warmth, no tools and no shelter! In pairs and threes, we discussed our needs and which were the most important. Which would we meet first? What could wait until later?!
Then, as a class, we fed back our thoughts to Mrs Jarvis. Mrs Jarvis then produced a class pyramid of needs on her computer and noted down the reasons for our rankings. After that, we wrote a typical daily time table for a Stone Age man or woman. (We had to think hard about what they would do and the order they would do it in!) We used our new knowledge to begin writing our Stone Age diary entries in our topic books!
Year three have started their new topic – ROCKS and SOIL!
First, we looked at some rocks on our tables. We tried to decide how to group them. We sorted them according to size, bumpiness, how flat they were and whether they contained crystals.
Secondly, we learnt about the difference between Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic rocks. Then we tried to sort the rocks into these groups.
