Oak Academy Guidance:

To navigate your way through the Oak academy lessons, click on the Next Activity button at the bottom right hand side of the screen.  Often this will lead to an introductory quiz which is just a starting off point to see how much you already know and to give you a clue to what you will learn about in the lesson.  You will need to close the quiz before you can move on.  Click Next Activity to start the lesson video.  You can pause the video when directed and return to this video at any point if you need to refresh what you learnt.  Sometimes, additional worksheets or knowledge organisers are also available so click through to Next Activity to see if any are available for your task.

Each week please try to complete the English and maths tasks, including activities set for reading and times tables.  The other activities are optional but we would hope that you would like to give them a try too!  We appreciate working from home is tricky so just do your best.

Maths

NOTE: this week's learning is new learning we have not covered in class

Each day’s learning videos can be found on the weekly maths plan listed in the maths resources below. To access, open the pdf and click on the daily video links.

All extension/support worksheets are listed below in Maths Resources.

For this sequence of lessons, you will need a protractor or use the printable version listed in the resources. If using the printable version, you may find it easier to measure the angles if you extend the lines on either side of the angle you are trying to measure.

Monday – Measure with a protractor

Remember the different types of angles are based on their size in degrees.

If you want to, try using this online protractor to measure angles  https://www.visnos.com/demos/basic-angles

Optional additional task: Identify if the angles on the Extension Task Sheet are greater than less than or equal to each other.

Finding it tricky? Try to label each of the angles types on the worksheet.

Wanting an extra challenge?  Have a go at identifying each of the angles hidden within the picture

Tuesday – Drawing lines and angles accurately

You will need a ruler, your protractor and a sharp pencil.

Optional additional task: Have a go at completing one or two of the challenge cards. They get harder as you go through them so select carefully

Finding it tricky?  Use the sheet below to draw angles with multiples of 5 degrees and the base line already drawn for you.

Wanting an extra challenge?  Create abstract pictures by following the instructions on the ‘Creating pictures with angles ‘sheet.  Explore different stating shapes and use a different colour way to make it your own!

Wednesday – calculating angles on a straight line

Remember to use your addition and subtraction strategies to find the missing angles. You could use number lines or formal methods to help you.

Optional additional task: Check to see if you have mastered the skills to calculate missing angles by completing the worksheet below.

Finding it tricky? Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBIJmmz8flI to help you further your understanding then try the question on the work sheet below which use multiples of 5 degrees.

Wanting an extra challenge?  Explore the interactive resource:  https://www.interactive-maths.com/angles-on-a-straight-line-ggb.html  scroll down to the second activity to see if you can work out the missing angle when it is surrounded by two other angles.

Thursday – calculating angles around a point

You do not need a protractor today because you are calculating rather than measuring.

Optional additional task: Select the right level for you (one, two or 3 stars) and complete the task sheet:

Finding it tricky?  Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt2yvO-xkhY to help you further your understanding then try the question on the work sheet below which use multiples of 5 degrees.

Wanting an extra challenge?  Explore the interactive resource:  https://www.interactive-maths.com/angles-around-a-point-ggb.html.

Science

Key question: How do the rocks on our earth’s surface change?

In this lesson you will find out about different processes which cause rocks to change through erosion, weathering and tectonic movements.

Before you start the lesson talk about: How do you think mountains formed? What about a single grain of sand – how did it get there?

Click here to start your lesson.

  • Introductory quiz – complete but don’t worry of you get something wrong.
  • Video – pause when asked and complete the tasks set out the worksheet or on paper. During the video, Miss Simkin carries out two demonstrations that you can also try which show the processes of weathering and erosion. If you want to carry out the demonstration about weathering with Miss Simkin, remember that you won’t be able to see your results until the following day.
  • Exit quiz – repeat questions from introductory quiz.
  • Optional extension task – make your own erosion model by filling a tray with soil/compost or sand. Tip the tray onto a slope and then slowly pour over water from one end. What do you notice happening? Tray increasing the slop: what effect does this have. Watch a video walk through of this demonstration for more detail. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YETdZyZI6es

What is life like in a Buddhist Monestary?

In this lesson, we will be learning about Buddhist monks and nuns. We will learn about the different schools of Buddhism and the journey that Buddhist lay people take to become a ‘full monk’. We will learn about daily life in a monastic community and we will compare life in a monastery to our own daily life. You will need a piece of paper, a pencil and your brain.

You will need a pen or pencil and your exercise book to complete this lesson. Pause the lesson when the teachers tells you to and start it again when you have completed the task.

There are a lot of PE activities available that you can do depending on the space or resources available. Here are some suggestions.

Art

Click here to see a picture of Lois and find out about her.

If you have oil pastels, you could try this fun project where you scrape off black oil pastel with a toothpick to get an amazing eye-popping effect:

If you don’t have pastels, you can try this project instead, using any creative materials you like – crayons, coloured pencils, paint or even try cutting up coloured paper or scraps of fabric and sticking down to make a collage.

The second black artist we are going to learn about is LOIS MAILOU JONES (1905-1998).

Type her name into Google Images and look at some of the amazing pieces of artwork she has produced.

You could start by learning a bit about her and then have a go at re-creating some of her brilliant pieces.

Topic

Learn a Viking Saga song!

Viking sagas were stories from Norse mythology about Viking Gods and Goddesses.

Click here to discover more about the underground world of the goblins! Scroll down the page to read the two-part saga ‘Freya and the Goblins’ and then scroll down again to learn the song ‘Goblins a go-go!’

Vikings as raiders vs. Vikings as traders

We know that the Vikings were raiders but there is also evidence to suggest that they were traders too.

Open the Viking Raiders vs Traders PPT below where you will:

  • Recap the previous topic lesson (week 3) about Viking visits and raids.
  • The PPT contains a link to the ‘Viking Traders’ BBC page: https://www.bbc.com/bitesize/articles/zw3qmp3,
  • Read the information and then click on ‘Find out more about Viking trade’ to watch video. Please make notes on some scrap paper/a notebook.
  • Compare notes with those on the PPT.
  • Create a poster detailing the two roles of the Viking visits – raiders and traders. Be creative! Think about your presentation – use flaps/alternative ways of revealing your points!

Optional additional task: ‘The Vikings were just take, take, take. They stole from the vulnerable monks and took Anglo-Saxon land. They didn’t give anything back.’ Do you agree with this statement? Explain why. Use your research to support/give reasons for your answer.
