Maths Work for Week 6 (11th May – 15th May)
Maths Aims For This Week:
For this week’s materials you will need access to ‘Pearson Power of Maths ebook’ which can be down loaded by following this link. After agreeing to terms and conditions, it will allow you access to Year 5 materials. The materials you require are taken from Textbook C. Page references are given in the plan below once you have downloaded the book. If you are unable to open this, use the Textbook C (PDF version) to access the material instead.
Guidance for completing your maths work:
Day 1: reflecting shapes
LI: to reflect 2D shapes in the x and y axis
Watch: Maths Doctor video clip on reflecting shapes. Start at 0:55 up to 5:46 – NOTE that he does use a diagonal refection line in one of his example but you will not be expected to do this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1VPXrdflfw
Ref challenge: Day1 worksheet refresher challenge. Page 1 only
Ch1: Day1 worksheet – Page 1 only. Textbook C Pages 130-131.Questions 1&2

Ch3: Day1 worksheet- Pages 7 & 8. Textbook C Pages 130-131 Questions 1,2&3
Extension: Play space invaders symmetry https://www.teacherled.com/iresources/symmetry/symmetryinvaders/
Day 2: reflecting points
LI: to use coordinates to find and plot a reflected point
Watch: Coordinates Corbett maths video to recap on how to use coordinates:
Ref challenge: Day 2 Ref Challenge worksheet -Plotting coordinates page 1 only. Then play ‘Alien attack’ https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/469/Coordinates-Alien-Attack
Ch1: Day2 worksheet - Questions 1- 6 only. Textbook C Pages 134-135.Questions 1&2
Ch2: Day2 worksheet Questions 1- 6 only – you must also write the coordinates of the newly reflected shapes. Textbook C Pages 134-135.Questions 1&2
Ch3: Day2 worksheet All questions plus coordinates of newly reflected shapes. NOTE the line x=y is the diagonal. Textbook C Pages 134-135.Questions 1,2&3
Work the missing coordinates https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/153/coordinates--reasoning-about-position-and-shapes
Day 3: What is translation?
LI: to translate 2D shapes
Watch: Translating shapes Corbett maths video https://corbettmathsprimary.com/2018/07/16/translations-video/
Ch1: Day3&4 worksheet - Page 1 only. Textbook C Pages 138-139.Questions 1&2

Extension: Test your skills at identifying how shapes have changed https://eng.mathgames.com/skill/5.112-identify-reflections-rotations-and-translations
Day 4: Using coordinates to move shapes
LI: to use coordinates to find and describe translations of 2D shapes
Watch: 'Drawing image of translation' Khan Academy:
Ch1: Day3&4 worksheet - Page 2- 4 only. Textbook C Pages 142-143.Questions 1&2
Ch2: Day3&4 worksheet - Page 2-4 only. Textbook C Pages 142-143.Questions 1&2

Day 5 : Investigating translating and reflecting shapes
LI: to use coordinates to find new translations
Select one or more of the activities to complete
Aims: To be last person to be able to place a pentomino piece on the playing board. To prevent your opponent(s) from finding space to place pentomino pieces on the board.
Explore what happens to coordinates when a shape moves. Can you predict new coordinates for the shapes?
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
