English Work For Week 6 (11th – 15th May)

English Aims For This Week:

  • to publish a narrative
  • to use passive verbs to affect the presentation of information in a sentence
  • to be able to explain what you have read
  • to draft a character description
  • to publish a character description
  • English Week 6 Instructions (printable version)

Monday:

LI: to publish my narrative about what happens to Tim in the poem

Proof read your narrative about Tim one more time (with a fresh pair of eyes) – try reading it aloud as you’re more likely to spot your errors.

Publish your narrative – you could choose to either hand write it (best handwriting!) or word process it on the computer. We would love to see your published story if you would like to email it to us!

Tuesday:

LI: to use passive verbs to affect the presentation of information in a sentence

The passive voice is used in more formal writing such as a scientific report.  Using the passive voice is a way of writing sentences so that the subject has the action 'done' to it.

As an introduction, watch:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z4hrt39/articles/zkttng8

Scroll down the webpage for the ‘passive voice quiz’

To find our more, open Tues PPT

Use Tues Help sheet as a reminder

Ch 1: Open Tues Ch1 Worksheet.  Read through the sentences and decide if they are active or passive. The answers are at the end of the worksheet.

Ch 2: Open Tues Ch2&3 Worksheet. Complete the first worksheet on the document (★).

The first activity asks you to ‘annotate the sentence’. Please label the subject, verb and object in the sentence and try to explain why it is passive (see Tues Help sheet for a hint). The answers are at the end of the worksheet.

Ch 3: Open  Tues Ch2&3 Worksheet. Complete the second worksheet on the document (★★).

The first activity asks you to ‘annotate the sentence’. Please label the subject, verb and object in the sentence and try to explain why it is passive (see Tues Help sheet for a hint). The answers are at the end of the worksheet.

Wednesday:

LI: to be able to explain what you have read

Today we would like you to recap your understanding of the Highwayman through answering some comprehension questions.

With your copy of the Highwayman poem (see Copy of HWM poem if you need access to the poem again), watch the YouTube video again to recap the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryu1JZiSbHo

Open Order of key events in the HWM poem, as a reminder of the order of the key parts of the story.

Now answer the following reading comprehension questions, either on the sheet or write out answers in your home learning book:

Ch 1: Open Wed Ch1 Worksheet and answer the retrieval and inference questions. The answers are at the end of the worksheet.

Ch 2: Open Wed Ch2&3 Worksheet and complete just the first page of ‘Exploring the Highwayman’. Once completed, open Ch2&3 Answers where you will also find the answers on the first page.

Ch 3: Open Wed Ch2&3 Worksheet and complete ALL of the questions (including the challenge). Open Ch2&3 Answers once you have finished.

Wednesday resources:

  • Wed Ch2&3 Worksheet
  • Ch2&3 Answers

Thursday:

LI: to draft a character description

The Highwayman is still on the run and is wanted by King George! Your task is to design a ‘WANTED’ poster, including enough description to identify this daring rogue!

Open MAIN WAGOLL and read through the description of the Highwayman to get an idea of how much detail we would like to see.

We have also included some WAGOLLs from previous year groups for you to see some other examples: open WAGOLL a, b and c.

Now, using the Thurs Planning Helpsheet, write your first draft of your wanted poster in your home learning book.

Choose from the following challenges:

Ch 1: Use powerful adjectives to describe his appearance and at least two similes

Ch 2: As above plus metaphors and use the text to help you - e.g. "twinkle" = lots of stolen goods on him/guns and swords

Ch 3: As above plus include two words from your Yr 5/6 spelling list.

Once you have completed your draft, use a purple polishing pen to edit and proof read.

To make the ‘WANTED’ poster as authentic as possible, we would like you to give it a tea-stained effect. You can either do this yourself or use the Tea-stained Poster Template. Instructions for both methods are below.

______________________________________________________________________

If tea-staining yourself:

1) On a piece of plain A4 paper or card (try to avoid shiny paper), use a ruler to lightly draw lines so yow know where to write and draw. Open Teastained Poster Template and Template Explained for guidance on drawing your lines.

  • draw a line for where your WANTED heading will go
  • leave space for your picture and then draw three lines for the three key bits of information
  • leave a small amount of space and then draw lines for your main paragraph of writing
  • leave a bit of space and then draw one last line for where you’ll write your reward amount

2) Pencil in your first draft (writing sections).

3) Lightly sketch your portrait of the Highwayman in the picture section, along with other detail.

You are now ready to tea-stain your piece of paper:

Step 1: put 2 teabags in a mug-full of water that has just boiled (PLEASE ASK AN ADULT TO HELP YOU WITH THIS). Let the liquid cool.

Step 2: Once cool, take the teabags and rub them onto the piece of paper, covering every part of the paper up to the edges.

Step 3: Leave to dry – we will finish this on Monday.

Take a look at https://www.wikihow.com/Age-Paper-Using-Tea for extra instructions, if you want them.

______________________________________________________________________

If using the Tea-stained Poster Template (rather than tea-staining):

  • Open the Tea-stained Poster Template
  • Use Template Explained  as a guide for what to write and draw where.
  • Pencil in your first draft into the writing sections.
  • Lightly sketch your portrait of the Highwayman in the picture section, along with other detail.

On Monday we will add fine liner!
