Maths Work for Week 7 (18th May – 22nd May)

Maths Aims For This Week:

  • Health and fitness themed maths FUN!

This week is health and fitness themed so each day will have a different focus. For example diet, mental health, physical activity or sports.  There are no challenge levels to select from this week but instead have lots of open investigations for you to pick and choose from. You are not expected to complete all the activities suggested for each day, not unless you want to of course!

  • Maths Week 7 H&F themed

Day 1: Healthy eating

We all know the old adage, ‘You are what you eat’ - well it really is true!  Having a balanced diet is key to both physical and mental well-being.

Activities

  • Some people argue that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Try to solve the Mystery of the brilliant breakfast.
  • Find out some healthy eating choices by solving the Mental maths mosaics.
  • Balance out your  calorific intake to exercise you have done  using the Working off the calories sheet.

Day 1 resources

  • Day 1 mystery of the brilliant breakfast.
  • Day 1 healthy eating mental calculations Mosaics
  • Day 1 Working off the calories

Day 2: Outdoor challenges

Did you know our bodies need Vitamin D which we absorb from sunlight to stay healthy? So spending more time outside doing anything is a good idea so why not get outside to some maths!

Activities

  • Pick one or two of the challenges to complete from the Outdoor learning challenge cards.
  • Everybody seems to be noticing nature more at the moment so why not carry out your own survey to see how many birds you can spot.

Use the common birds’ spotters guide to help you identify different types of birds. You will need to try to spot these birds and record your sightings on a tally chart. You could carry out the survey for about 20mins each day or just as a one off! Once all the data has been collected, the data can then be represented in a number of different ways, for example:

- A tally chart

- A bar chart depicting the number of each type of bird spotted. Which is the most common? Which is the least common?

- A pictogram depicting your favourite type of bird you have spotted.

  • Have a go at writing Roman numerals using sticks (Roman numerals are written as a combination of 7 letters – I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500 and M=1000). Firstly, you will need to collect small sticks (around 5cm long) or use lolly sticks if you have them – you are going to need a lot of them so get your family to help you. Arrange the sticks to show Roman numerals to make the numbers 1 – 10. What do you notice about how we make the number 4 and 9 in Roman numerals? Why do you think it is written this way? Now create numbers 1 - 20. What do you notice about the numbers 24 (XXIV) and 29 (XXIX)? Can you make the numbers 40 (XL) and 90 (XC)? Now have a go at making some bigger numbers using Roman numerals, based on the number of different species found in nature in Britain. In the U.K. there are 250 (CCL) different species of bees, 58 (LVIII) different species of butterflies, 598 (DIXVIII) species of British birds and 650 (DCL) different species of spiders! Make Roman numerals to represent these facts and then try to find out some of your own – don’t forget to take lots of photographs.

Day 2 resources

  • Day 2 outdoor learning challenges
  • Day 2 bird counting sheet
  • Day 2 Birds spotters guide

Day 3: Olympics

The Olympics are seen as the highlight of any athlete’s career.  They were due to be held in Japan this year but have been rescheduled for 2021. If you were to take part, what sporting event would you choose?

Activities

  • Test yourself against some of these Olympic records – how do you compare? 'Olympic starters' https://nrich.maths.org/8170
  • Each year, athletes try to beat the records set previously.  Is it possible to predict these new results?  See if you can solve this 'Now and Then' problem https://nrich.maths.org/8171
  • Olympics top trumps (https://nrich.maths.org/8317) have a go playing with the cards and then see if you can add your own athletes to the pack or even create a whole new set.

Day 3

  • Day 3 top trumps cards

Day 4: Mindfulness maths

Mental health is just as important as physical health.  Right now, things can seem worrying or overwhelming so taking a bit of time out to relax and refocus can really help.

Activities

  • Explore these 2D shape colouring and then have a go at making your own.
  • Create your own 3D shapes decorated with intricate patterns.  Use the 3D shape nets or have a go at making your own nets to glue together. Again, take lots of photographs.
  • Lots of mindfulness patterns are symmetrical Mandalas. Have a go at creating you own mandala to print and colour - https://www.staedtler.com/intl/en/mandala-creator/#

Day 4 resources

  • Day 4 2D shape colouring
  • Day 4 3D shape nets
  • Day 4 symmetrical patterns

Day 5 : Sporting fixtures

We know lots of you enjoy playing sports, whether it's just for fun or as part of a team.  In case you are missing out on your favourite sport or want to try something new, select an activity from our sporting fixtures list below.

Activities

  • Missing taking a dip in the pool? Solve the Swimming baths mystery or work out the volumes of the Swimming pools.
  • Download the Anyone for Tennis booklet: https://www.tennisfoundation.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/TFCross-Curricular-Tennis-Week8th-EditionJul16.pdf and using pages 20- 33 , take your pick of these activities: Court in the act is a scale drawing problem (page 20), Wimbledon souvenirs looks at using different coins (page 25), Nightmare tournament is a 2 digit number puzzle (page 26), One game all challenges you to unpick the data (page 27) and Tiebreaker teasers are a section of tennis themed word problems.
