What homework are children set in year 3?
In year 3, children are set a weekly spelling homework sheet to complete as well as a times table to practise. Children are also expected to read at least three times a week at home.
Children are also set a fortnightly learning log. This a more creative task based on current classroom topics.
How do I know which times table my child should be practising?
Children work through times tables in the following order:
2 10 5 4 3 6 8 9 7 11 12
Each week, children complete a times table test. Children are given two minutes to write out the times table twice:
If they score 26/26 on two consecutive occasions, they move on to the next times table.
If your child is ready to move onto a new times table, a note will be made in their homework book at the bottom of their spelling sheet.
Once all times tables are completed, children move from bronze (where all questions are in order) to silver (where questions are muddled up).
How many house points do children receive for reading?
Reading is recorded in the child’s reading record. In year three, children are awarded one house point for reading 3 times in a week, two house points for 4 reads and 3 house points for 5+ reads.
Outstanding efforts may result in bonus house points.
What is a learning log?
Learning logs are set fortnightly. They are based on current topics in the classroom. They are way for children to demonstrate what they have learnt/what they already know creatively. For example, in year 3, children may be asked to show what they have learnt about plants. Children will be given a few ideas to get them started, but the format of their work is totally up to them.

Can children bring pencil cases to school?
Yes. Children are allowed pencil cases in year three.
Although, if the contents become a distraction, they may be asked not to bring certain items back into class!
When does swimming start?
Swimming starts during term four. Each class will require 4 parent helpers per week to accompany 3EJ and 3AJ to the pool. (A letter with more details will be sent out closer to the time)
During the first lesson, children are assessed by qualified instructors at the leisure centre and are grouped accordingly. Groups aren’t fixed and many children are moved throughout the terms. At the end of each term, children take part in a FUN SWIM, which is always thoroughly enjoyed!
